Verse of the Day:
Psalm 37:1-2
Do not fret because of evil me or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.
(Evil grin) you thought I was done? I was just getting warmed up. Kendrick latest drop, GNX is going to be a part of my Kendrick conversation this year because if "To Pimp a Butterfly" was the pain, "DAMN" was the passion and "Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers" was the peace....THIS....GNX is the PURGE. Let's get into it. I won't be before you long (ha!)
My Thesis:
He's calling people OUT, and he's NOT holding back, we are given the full extent of what he's capable of doing when he's pushed too far. We see the complexities of his duality all throughout this (He literally has a full conversation with the holy spirit in reincarnated) and that song shares the same album with Luther and Squabble Up.....the man is dangerous for so many validated reasons. Then to have the audacity to end it all with a song about the bond he has with his pen......dude....WHO IS THIS MAN!? first of all, the beginning of the song GNX had me floored....he really was loving every minute of this year long crash out and we LOVE it for him! Now, while he is being an absolute BEAST and living up to his name as the Boogyman, he still maintains his lyrical pattern of introspective genius. The fight is not over for Kendrick in GNX but he's fighting back with bars that leave me nearly incapable of not going back to hear it again. My special nickname for Kendrick is Thanos...because there's no way I'd be on the other side of the shots being thrown and still exist. This album is total solidarity with who he is....KENDRICK LAMAR.
Isaiah's Perspective and Thesis
In so many words, this is most different view of Kendrick Lamar we've seen. We get a kendrick who's decided to go on offense of exposing and calling out the toxicity of black culture yet somehow leveling with it. Many see this album as shots to Drake, esspecially coming after the beef of the century, but he never mentions him with the acception of "Wacced Out Murals". I found it funny that Kendrick expressed that this wasn't going to be a "deep" album but you can still see the layers throughout multiple listens. His performance of these songs at the 2025 Super Bowl was another way of Kendrick not appealing to the masses but focusing on the message. In my opinion, THAT was the epitome of true artistry. I believe the goal was to get people to go back and understand Kendrick. The idea of the black GNX being made in 1987 and the ONLY color made by Buick that year, correlating to Kendricks birth that year AND being brought home in it is what I'm referring to. It also baffled me when I learned that in that year, that particular car beat out the ferrari in the NASCAR race and upon further research, we discover that Ferrari's nickname was "il Drake"....WOW. I don't have many theories and conclusion as this is an album that I'm still currenlty listening to and I'm still in my phase of just enjoying it. 2024 was the year we were gifted with the most songs from Kendrick with the inclusion of an Album. There are definetly theories circulating around, such as the one about "Peek-a-Boo" being an exposition of XXXTentacion's murder being linked to Drake. (not 100 percent certain I agree that one.) We finally get a Kendrick in place to put a lot of L.A rappers, that we'd never heard of in positions such as the rapper AZChike getting signed to Warner Brothers.
